There are so many different roles that black women play in our society. Mother. Boss. Prayer warrior. Advocate. Change-maker. Caregiver. Healer. Fighter. And for the longest time, she has occupied those spaces in the shadows, doing the work of pushing us forward and carrying the weight of so much with little accolade or understanding. At this moment, however, the collective efforts and voices of generations of black women have reached a fevered pitch and forced unimaginable change. I am awe of us. And as we stand on the precipice of all the change WE fought for, I felt compelled to acknowledge the work it took to get here. Royal Family Productions asked me to write a piece that speaks to this moment; I share it with you now below. Everyone deserves to be seen, including you. Please take a moment to check out my piece, “See Her”, produced by Royal Family Productions and performed by spoken word artist Kenita Miller and dancer Gabrielle Sprauve.
